Coach Stephen Kearney has added experience to the bench for the Kiwis’ second Test against England at London’s Olympic Stadium on Saturday (2.30pm kick-off local time; 3.30am Sunday NZT).
After losing 12-26 in Hull on Monday morning, the world’s top side must win this weekend to retain hope of New Zealand’s first series win in England since 1998.
The Kiwis led 10-0 inside the first 16 minutes at KC Stadium but seemed to lose momentum once Kearney went to the bench.
This time round, he retained his starting line-up but recalled the experienced Lewis Brown and Alex Glenn for debutants Kodi Nikorima and Sio Siua Taukeiaho on the bench. Brown boasts eight Tests since his debut in 2011 plus 150 NRL appearances while Glenn has played 10 Tests and 168 NRL games.
“Both these guys we’re bringing in were a bit unlucky to miss out the week before and offer a great deal of experience,” said Kearney.
“Looking at last week’s game, that will be important for us this week. Lewis has done a great job for us in the past and Alex Glenn has had a wonderful year, so it’s just desserts for them.
“We’re in a position where we have to perform and these guys have done it for us before.”
The last time the Kiwis played England in London was at Wembley when Shaun Johnson scored in the dying stages and then converted for a 20-18 win in their semi-final at the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.
