Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George has commended the NRL on its “business as usual” decision for the rest of the first-round games this weekend.
NRL CEO Todd Greenberg tonight confirmed the remaining seven games in the round will go ahead as planned, including the Vodafone Warriors’ season-opening match against the Knights in Newcastle tomorrow.
Following meetings during the day with government officials and other stakeholders in Australia, Greenberg has indicated next weekend’s second-round matches will be played in front of empty stadiums.
However, George says further clarification is required around the rugby league-rugby union double header at Eden Park next Saturday when the Vodafone Warriors are due to meet the Canberra Raiders in the NRL followed by a Super Rugby match between the Blues and the Brumbies.
“We support the NRL’s decision to proceed with this week’s matches as planned, to play them in front of fans,” he said.
“They’ve taken advice from all key stakeholders in reaching this decision while also making an announcement that next week’s games will be played behind closed doors.
“However, the status of our double header with the Blues in Auckland is yet to be resolved.
“We need to clarify the position with government agencies in New Zealand as well as the NRL. We’re under a different jurisdiction and have to ensure we consult with the relevant authorities before making a final decision.”
George said he hoped an announcement would be made by Monday.
