Look who’s back – yes, it’s one of New Zealand’s favourite sporting legends Ruben Wiki.
On the comeback trail after recovering from an Achilles injury which laid him up last year, he has been confirmed as a starter in what is now the virtual 2022 Ports of Auckland Round the Bays on Sunday, March 6.
As the Warriors Community Foundation ambassador, he was listed to spearhead a team entered by the organisation.
“It’s exciting knowing Ruben is back to fitness and can lead our effort. He has so much mana and a huge passion for what we’re doing,” said Warriors Community Foundation CEO Lincoln Jefferson.
“We’ll be striving to raise as much as we can to help us deliver our programmes to the community.”
The 49-year-old Wiki, renowned for his training ethic, has dedicated his post-playing career to community causes not least in Otara where he has established his family-run gym Wiki Workz.
“I’m really looking forward to running in Round the Bays after spending so long in rehab,” said Wiki.
“It’s all about raising funds for what’s a very special cause for me.
“The Warriors Community Foundation gives me the chance to help with programmes on improving literacy, focusing on wellbeing and raising awareness of issues surrounding domestic violence as well as other projects. They all mean a lot to me.”\
The foundation’s aim is to connect, educate and inspire local communities.
The Vodafone Warriors have been committed to supporting community causes for the past 13 years. Together with the foundation, which was set up in 2020, the club has reached more than 320,000 pupils from 2400 schools.
