Registrations open for SG Ball and Harold Matthews trials

After fielding a full complement of pathways teams for the first time this season, the One New Zealand Warriors are now setting out to build their age group rosters for 2025.

Invitational trials have been scheduled for each of the club’s squads in the Jersey Flegg Cup (under-21), SG Ball Cup (under-19) and Harold Matthews Cup (under-17) grades in the New South Wales Rugby league’s competitions.

Registrations opened on August 1 for the Jersey Flegg trial scheduled for September 28 and from today (Monday, August 12) players can now register for the SG Ball Cup and Harold Matthews Cup trials to be held on October 12 (see full details below).

The trials follow a landmark season which has seen the Warriors win the Harold Matthews Cup premiership, becoming the first club since the competition’s maiden season in 1970 to win the grand final on debut.

The SG Ball Cup side pushed for a spot in the finals but ultimately missed out while the Jersey Flegg team’s 2024 season is still running.

The critical feature of the year has been the number of young footballers the Warriors have developed through the grades.

Numerous players who started the season in the SG Ball Cup or the Jersey Flegg Cup have been promoted while three players eligible for age group teams at the start of the season have made their NRL debuts – Jacob Laban (20), Zyon Maiu’u (21) and Leka Halasima (18).

“We have developed a lot of players this season and we’re really seeing the benefits of investing in a structured pathways programme,” said One New Zealand Warriors general manager recruitment, development and pathways Andrew McFadden.

“Our trials are all about looking for more young players who are keen to represent the One New Zealand Warriors at under-21, under-19 and under-17 level next year.

“Once registrations are closed our team will work through them and invite players for the trials. Players from throughout New Zealand and Australia are welcome to register.”
