NSW Cup Team List: Race hots up for finals spots

The One New Zealand Warriors are right in the mix for the preferred top spots in the New South Wales Cup finals heading into their 24th-round clash against the Sea Eagles at 4 Pines Park tomorrow (12.30pm kick-off local time; 2.30pm NZT).

Following their win over the South Sydney last weekend, the Warriors have climbed to 31 points to lie fourth on the table, a mere two points behind the competition-leading North Sydney.

The ladder is extremely congested with the Bears on 33 followed by Canberra (32), Newtown and the Warriors (31) and Canterbury Bankstown (30) with St George Illawarra and Penrith just a further two points back on 28.

After facing the ninth-placed Sea Eagles on Saturday, the Warriors meet the fourth-ranked Bulldogs at Go Media Stadium next Friday before finishing the regular season against the third-placed Newtown Jets in round 26.

Among the leading five clubs, their path would seem to be the most demanding with pivotal matches against two top five sides.

This is how the last three rounds pan out:

  • North Sydney (33) | Penrith (7th), Sydney Roosters (11th), Newcastle (8th).
  • Canberra (32) | St George Illawarra (6th), Penrith (7th), Sydney Roosters (11th).
  • Newtown (31) | Bye, St George Illawarra (6th), Warriors (4th).
  • Warriors (31) | Sea Eagles (9th), Canterbury Bankstown (5th), Newtown (3rd).
  • Canterbury Bankstown (30) | Sydney Roosters (11th), Warriors (4th), Sea Eagles (9th).
  • St George Illawarra (28) | Canberra (2nd), Newtown (3rd), Parramatta (10th).
  • Penrith (28) | North Sydney (1st), Canberra (2nd), South Sydney (12th).

The key factor for all sides is the make-up of their squads each week which can vary dramatically depending on who’s available from each club’s NRL side.

When the Warriors named their team to take on the Sea Eagles, Luke Metcalf was listed at halfback but that's now out of the question with confirmation he’ll start for NRL side against Manly tonight. Other changes could be possible as well.

The Sea Eagles have selected a side which boasts a number of players with substantial NRL experience including props Aaron Woods (268 games) and former Warrior Matt Lodge (117), centres Brad Parker (117) and Jaxson Paulo (63) and hooker Jake Simpkin (47).When the Warriors and the Sea Eagles met at Go Media Stadium in April, the visitors prevailed 24-18.
