Harry Durbin’s development curve has continued its upward trajectory with his Jersey Flegg Cup player of the year accolade at the One New Zealand Warriors’ annual awards.
The 20-year-old Pikiao (Rotorua) and Point Chevalier Pirates junior surged from being the club’s SG Ball Cup (under-19) captain last season to start 2024 as the Jersey Flegg Cup (under-21) skipper before being promoted to the New South Wales Cup team.
While still eligible for the under-19 grade, he was targeted for development at a higher level, ultimately splitting his season evenly between the Jersey Flegg Cup and New South Wales Cup grades.
Impressing with his consistency and leadership, Durbin was one of four nominees for the Jersey Flegg Cup player of the year alongside hooker Jaydee Auloa and centre Nganatatafu Vake – both of whom started the season in SG Ball – and utility Siale Faeamani.
Nominees for the Jersey Flegg Cup emerging player of the year were Augustino Filipo, Garry Tuilekutu, Maui Winitana Patelesio and Vake. The award went to Vake (19), who ended the season making appearances for the club in the SG Ball Cup, the Jersey Flegg Cup and New South Wales Cup.
Alvin Chong Nee was named the team man of the year ahead of Patelesio, Raphael Sio and Toby Crosby.
